Cheadle Hulme School was founded in 1855 as the “Manchester Warehousemen and Clerks’ Orphan Schools”, providing educational opportunities for young people from all walks of life to develop into outstanding contributors to the next generation. The school was unusual in that, from the outset, it catered for boys and girls. Thus a century and a half of true co-education has strengthened the school’s approach in providing equal opportunity to all pupils from a diversity of backgrounds.

Claremont Canzona was commissioned by Cheadle Hulme School to celebrate the sesquicentenary of the founding of the school. This one movement work is dedicated to Philip Dewhurst and all the musicians who gave the first performance on March 11th 2006 in their splendid 150th anniversary concert at the Royal Northen College of Music.
